General Audition Information

Casting for the main season typically occurs twice a year. These General Auditions are usually held in September and December. Auditions are open to all CHS students, except those students who are ineligible. After each audition, callback lists are posted on the callboard and posted on facebook. Cast lists are posted after callbacks are completed. Sign up sheets and instructions will be posted on the callboard prior to auditions.

Auditions can consist of a reading or monologue, which should not exceed a minute and a half (90 seconds) in length. If a musical is being cast, you must prepare 16 bars from a song as part of your audition and participate in the dance audition. You will be required to fill out an audition form listing any schedule conflicts, special skills, and previous roles you have had. Audition packets with specific criteria are available one week prior to auditions starting.

Audition Guidelines - Recommendations

  1. Be prepared. Know your audition selection.
  2. Avoid overused materials. You might be remembered for the originality of your selection.
  3. Relax. The auditorium lobby can be used for warm-ups. Use the time to focus.
  4. Be on time with completed application form in hand.
  5. Cooperate cheerfully with the audition staff.
  6. Choose clothes that are simple and allow freedom of movement.
  7. Choose a piece that reflects your casting type or potential character.
  8. Avoid audition material that depends on props.
  9. Time yourself. You should not exceed the 90-second limit.
  10. If a musical is being cast, you must include 16 bars from a song.

Audition Guidelines - Cautions

  1. Be quiet while waiting to audition, and don’t disturb others who might be warming up.
  2. Never use a script or lyrics during an audition.
  3. Don’t describe the scene or provide exposition.
  4. Don’t focus your audition at an imaginary character in an on-stage chair.
  5. If you go blank, try to be charming. Don’t make excuses.
  6. Don’t use a dialect unless it is specifically requested.
  7. Hold the last dramatic moment just before dropping character and breaking out of your scenic concentration.
  8. Thank the people who auditioned you before you leave.
  9. If you are ill, do not make excuses, just do the best you can.
